Bariatric Revision

Bariatric revision surgery modifies or converts a previous weight-loss operation — for example, converting a sleeve to a bypass, or correcting a complication from an earlier procedure. Revisions are usually more complex than first operations, and the plan depends heavily on what was done before.

It is typically considered by people who have regained weight after an earlier operation, whose original procedure caused ongoing problems such as severe reflux, or whose anatomy has changed. Full records of the original surgery matter: the operative report tells the revision surgeon what they will find.

Useful questions for a provider: how many revisions they perform each year — revision experience is its own skill — what records and imaging they need before proposing a plan, which conversion they would propose and why, and how the risks compare with a first-time operation.
