El Moro has been frying churros in the same tiled corner of the Centro since 1935, and the ritual has not changed: a paper sleeve of them, crisp and sugared, with chocolate thick enough to stand a spoon in. The blue-and-white original stays open into the small hours and glows like a lighthouse on Eje Central.

It is not a meal; it is the punctuation between other things — after the Zócalo, before the ride home. The newer branches around the city are faithful, but the original is the one you remember.

Getting there

A few minutes' walk south of Bellas Artes in the Centro; there are also branches in Roma Norte and Condesa if you want the churros without the journey.

If you are recovering

Counter seating, no waits at off-hours, and nothing on the menu that requires ambition: this is an ideal first outing when appetite is returning. If your care team has you on a restricted diet, the hot chocolate comes in four styles from bitter to very sweet — ask for the simplest.
