If the suitcase has room for exactly one shopping trip, La Ciudadela is it: three hundred stalls of Mexican craft — Oaxacan alebrijes, Talavera from Puebla, hammocks, silver, embroidered textiles — organized, honest, and priced for humans.
Quality ranges from souvenir to serious; the difference is visible and the vendors will tell you the truth about it more often than not. Cash gets better numbers, and the courtyard lunch counters keep the expedition civilized.
Getting there
On the western edge of the Centro at Metro Balderas (Lines 1 and 3); 15-25 minutes by rideshare from Roma Norte or Condesa.
If you are recovering
Ground level and step-free throughout, with wide main aisles — easier walking than most markets. It is still a couple of hours on your feet if you browse properly; the courtyard fondas midway make a natural sit-down break. Gentle haggling is expected, pressure is not.
