Every Saturday since 1960, San Ángel’s Plaza San Jacinto turns into the city’s finest craft-and-art fair: the juried indoor bazar in a 17th-century mansion holds the serious work — jewelry, ceramics, textiles a cut above market grade — while painters ring the plazas outside.
It is as much a day out as a shopping trip: colonial lanes, bougainvillea over stone walls, and long lunches. Of the southern excursions, this is the one with the built-in calendar.
Getting there
30-50 minutes by rideshare south from the central neighborhoods. It only exists on Saturdays, so it sets the day: bazar in the morning, lunch nearby, and Coyoacán twenty minutes east if energy remains.
If you are recovering
San Ángel is all cobblestones and gentle slopes — beautiful and slightly demanding underfoot, so this is a good-shoes, take-your-time outing. The indoor bazar has a courtyard restaurant midway; the outdoor plazas have low walls and steps people perch on.
