The House of Tiles is what happens when a colonial palace, Puebla talavera, and a department-store restaurant collide: the entire facade wears blue-and-white tile, and the courtyard inside — glass-roofed, peacock murals, an Orozco on the staircase — has served breakfast to a century of the city’s plotting and gossip.
The food is reliable Mexican comfort rather than a culinary destination, and that is exactly its use: you are eating inside a landmark, at landmark-free prices.
Getting there
At the Bellas Artes end of the Madero pedestrian street — combine it with the palace across the road or the walk to the Zócalo. Metro Bellas Artes is two minutes away.
If you are recovering
A proper sit-down restaurant with unhurried table service, elevators to the upper floor, and no pressure to move on: one of the most comfortable ways to experience the Centro without walking it. The enchiladas suizas are the house classic; gentler options fill the menu.
