Coyoacán’s market does everything a Mexican market should — produce pyramids, mounds of moles, piñatas swaying overhead — and one thing famously: the tostada counters at its heart, where seafood, tinga and pata are stacked onto crisp tortillas for a fraction of restaurant prices.
Come after the Casa Azul, eat standing or perched on a stool, and buy the vanilla, chiles and cajeta that make the suitcase smell wonderful.
Getting there
Three blocks from the Frida Kahlo museum — the two are one outing. 30-50 minutes by rideshare from the central neighborhoods.
If you are recovering
Aisles are narrow and floors uneven in places; it is a real working market, not a curated one. The tostada counters have stools — arrive off-peak and you can sit. If crowds and smells are still difficult, do a short pass for the color and save the eating for the plaza cafes.
